Here are several tips on route safety when out looting. Follow them and you drastically increase your chance of surviving.
- If aggro is high (or if in an area with long-arms/fast zombies) and you come to a point in the road with only a narrow opening (such as when a bus is laying across the road, or two cars intersect) sprint through it, don't walk. By doing this you ensure that you do not get trapped in the narrow passage by any zombies who may appear at both ends.
- Alternatively, take another route. A simple one-block detour will suffice, if you are really insistent on staying safe.
- Any time you encounter crows, KILL THEM IMMEDIATELY. Even with strong armor they can rapidly deplete your health. Do NOT try running under them as it has been found (after the update) that this tactic only works about half of the time. If more than two crows appear, kill the one that is directly in your path of escape (which is usually the closest one). Sprint forward, take out the second, then the third; rinse and repeat for more crows.
- If you encounter an opening (such as a doorway) next to a narrow space that you must pass (such as the end of a bus laying across the street), either wait till a zombie spawns at the doorway and kill it (to ensure one won't spawn as your passing through, and trap you), or find an alternative route, such as a pathway on the opposite end of the bus.
- Preferably, check with the forums ahead of time. Someone may have already ran your route and may know of any dead ends or choke-points.
- Frequently check your map (unless in MP) to ensure you do not get lost, or overshoot your target. Not turning when your supposed to turn, or going a couple blocks past your goal not only wastes valuable time, but it also allows time for aggro to increase, as well as cause you to miss potentially loot able corpses.
- Finally, KNOW when it's time to head home. Insane aggro (such as 6-8 spawns every clock tick), or low-health is an indicator that it might be time to backtrack. If you determined this to be a suicide run beforehand, or decide it to be while out, that's fine. But if your looking to head home, and have low health, consider backtracking the same route so as not to run into any unexpected problems, such as choke points, blocked roads, accidentally walking into an area with monsters more powerful then your accustomed to, etc.(Just know, you CAN'T get items from loot spots you already looted on the way there.)
