Forts/Barricades
Forts or barricades are shelter from the zombie (and rogue human) menace.
The game will eventually allow movable objects, which means you can barricade a building and hideout there short-term. But there won't be a system for long term occupancy on release. You will need to come back to the main outpost (browser section).
Currently, most buildings have furniture and decoration on the interior. These includes couches, dressers, wallpaper, floor tiling, door frames, window frames, and many other objects. Furniture was said to be movable, but not all furniture and decorations have been added to the game yet, but there will be movable furniture, because barricading is impossible without it.
AdminPwn has since abandoned the idea of movable furniture, instead he intends to make building doors and windows open/shut, and intends to make buildings "capturable" meaning that people will be able to make outposts out of regular buildings. For more info read his post.
Interestingly, the buildings are already set to either be a market, bank, police station, hospital or even a public bathroom. This means that different buildings have different loot sets. This is set to be implemented soon, often speculated to be the same time as clan bases are added.
AdminPwn has stated in the past that buildings will be fixed and completed soon after the party system. As of September 2008, the party system is released and furniture is in buildings, though they are not able to be barricaded.

When / or if this feature does come out , when you move furniture i think you will need a reasonable amount of strength to push the furniture , i mean come on your not gonna have 5 strength and push a HOLE bed by yourself , i would say for a bed you would need 70 strength to even move it, and i would like the fact that people woul actually be able to help you , and i would like to see not only barricaded buildings , but also strreets , say if you've got a way - way junction that leads north , east , south and west , and you had like 90 strength or 2 other people there you could push cars to make a some barricaded fort in the middle of the street to protect yourself from zombies , personally if the fact of moving furniture goes into this much detail , i would be pleased , i know it's a little much but i still like to toss out ideas , so ya know ^.^ .
